مادران اجاره‌ای: آدم‌هایی که نه قهرمان داستانند و نه شخصیت شرور آن

پادما همیشه کوچکتر و معمولی‌تر از آن بود که در ذهن داشتم. وقتی بعد از ترکِ بمبئی دوباره او را دیدم، بازهم از کوچکیِ جثه‌اش متحیر شدم ‌ـــ‌ دمِ در با لباس خانگیِ رنگ و رو رفته، موهای ضخیم و بافته و روغن‌زده، و دستانی پر از النگوهای شیشه‌ای سبزرنگ که زنانِ شوهردارِ مَراتی [در هند] به دست دارند. وقتی به بروکلین برگشتم، نگرانی‌ام این بود که چه‌طور کارش را به ‌تصویر بکشم، و آیا اصلا باید دربارۀ او چیزی بنویسم یا نه.

از سالِ 2005 تا 2015، هندوستان مرکز اصلیِ مادرانِ جایگزین (یا رحمِ اجاره‌ای) بود؛ زوج‌های نازا و همجنس‌گرا از کشورهایی که مادرِ جایگزین در آن‌ها غیرقانونی یا پرهزینه بود، به این کشور سرازیر می‌شدند. در کلینیک‌های باروریِ هند، زنان محلی با نرخ‌هایی ارزان بچه به‌دنیا می‌آوردند. البته گفته می‌شد که 4000 تا 6000 دلاری که مادرانِ جایگزین کاسب می‌شدند، زندگی‌شان را عوض می‌کرد؛ یعنی حتی می‌شد با این پول خانه‌ای بخرند یا خرج تحصیلِ فرزندشان را تامین کنند؛ ولی این حرف‌ها (و جنبه‌های مختلفِ این تجارت) مخالفانِ زیادی داشت.

مادرانِ جایگزین، در رسانه‌های محلی و جهانی، یا به‌صورت افرادی نشان داده می‌شدند که پول زیادی گیرشان می‌آید، یا قربانیانی بودند که مجبور شده‌اند رحم‌شان را «کرایه» دهند. در اکتبر 2015، دولت هند با این استدلال که این پدیده نوعی بهره‌کشی از زنانِ فقیر است، استفاده از رحمِ اجاره‌ای را برای تمامِ مشتریانِ خارجی ممنوع کرد. در یک دهه شکوفاییِ این پدیده در هند، صدها گزارش از این موارد شنیده شد، اما در اخبار باروریِ زوج‌های غربی، معمولا جای این مادران خالی بود، یا فقط نقشِ مکمل را بازی می‌کردند؛ درواقع آ‌ن‌ها خودشان هم از دیده‌شدن گریزان بودند.

مثلا سال 2012، تلویزیونِ ان‌بی‌سی ماجرای یک زوج اهل وایومینگ [آمریکا] را پخش کرد که نوزادشان را از یک کلینیکِ مادرانِ جایگزین در گجرات [هند] دریافت کردند. در آن‌جا آن‌ها با اوشا آشنا شدند که سرِ زایمان در هفتۀ بیست‌وهفتم نزدیک بود جان بدهد؛ زوجِ آمریکایی هم به‌خاطر این جان‌فشانی، کمی بیشتر احساسِ قدردانی می‌کردند. اصلا از اوشا نامی برده نمی‌شود. او تجسمِ یک عکسِ اینترنتی پرطرفدار است که سه زنِ حامله را نشان می‌دهد، درحالی‌که شکم‌های متورم‌شان از لباسِ هندی‌شان بیرون زده و سرهای‌شان از عکسِ حذف شده است. واقعا این زنانِ بی‌نام‌ونشان که بودند؟ چه دیدی نسبت به خودشان داشتند؟

برای یافتن پاسخ این سوالات، یک بورسیۀ تحقیقاتی دریافت کردم و آگوست 2009 به بمبئی پروار کردم. قبلا هرگز در هند نبودم، اما تازه در رشتۀ ادبیاتِ غیرداستانیِ خلاق فارق‌التحصیل شده بودم ‌ـــ‌ رشته‌ای که نویسندگان را تشویق می‌کند به استقبالِ ناشناخته‌ها بروند. هدف این است که مثل یک انسان‌شناس، آن‌قدر یادداشت و گزارش جمع کنی تا مجموعۀ این یادداشت‌ها، مثل یک کتابِ غیرداستانی و به اندازۀ یک رمان غنی شود. به‌نظرم، این تصویرگریِ پیچیده، به مادرانِ جایگزینْ بلندگویی برای حرف‌زدن می‌داد. هرگز به فکرم خطور نمی‌کرد که همین داستانْ شش سال وقتم را بگیرد، یا بقیۀ سال‌های جوانی‌ام را به‌خودش اختصاص دهد.

سونالی، 26 ساله، در آپارتمان تک‌اتاقۀ خود در اولاسناگر، در محلۀ زاغه‌ نشینِ ویتال‌واژی، در همسایگی خانۀ دو مادرِ جایگزین دیگر

در فرودگاه بمبئی، بار و بنه‌ام را تحویل گرفتم و دنبال خودم کشیدم ‌ـــ‌ شب شده بود و هوا تیره و تار. در تاکسی، پنجره‌های بازِ ماشین باعث می‌شد هوای گرمسیریِ پر از دود و بخور و گُه وارد ماشین شود. از ریکشاها [کالسکه‌ها] سبقت گرفتیم؛ از کنار مردانِ لاغراندامی رد شدیم که دور کیوسک‌هایی که با نور تک‌چراغی روشن بودند، چمباتمه زده بودند. زنانی که ساری به‌تن داشتند، نشسته و پاهای‌شان را توی جدولِ خیابان می‌گذاشتند. در هتل، از این‌که از بخشِ خدماتِ هتلْ فقط یک بطری آب درخواست کرده بود [و نه بیشتر]، احساس نبوغ می‌کردم. شهر پُر از ساختمان‌های فرسوده و آلودگی و پشه و بوق‌های پیاپی بود؛ در تقاطع‌های خفه‌کننده‌اشْ کودکانِ پابرهنه، دستان‌شان را روی شیشه‌های ماشین‌های مدل‌بالا چسبانده و گدایی می‌کردند؛ به گم‌گشتگیِ عمیقی دچار شده بودم.

حال که فکرش را می‌کنم، می‌بینم خوش‌شانس بودم که پنج ماه بعد با پادما آشنا شدم. من نیاز داشتم به آن‌جا عادت کنم و آن‌قدر هندی یاد بگیرم که بتوانم مودب باشم. من ازطریق خواهرشوهرِ پادما با او آشنا شدم (خواهرشوهرش هم قبلا مادرِ جایگزین بود و ژانویۀ 2010 در یکی از کلینیک‌های بمبئی با او آشنا شده بودم). تا آن زمان، من با چند مادر جایگزین مصاحبه کرده بودم، اما همیشه در حضور یک وکیل بود؛ درواقع بعد از یک گزارشِ تحقیقیِ استرالیایی، دکترهای آن‌ها نسبت به رسانه‌ها بی‌اعتماد شده بودند. این وضعیتْ اجازۀ گفتگوهای بی‌پرده را نمی‌داد، برای همین من از خواهرشوهرِ پادما ممنون بودم که به من اجازه داد تا با او در خانه ملاقات کنم.

وقتی اولین‌بار دمِ درِ خانه‌اش سبز شدم، خیلی محتاط بود. یک دلیلش این بود که زنی سفیدپوست در شهر اولاسناگر [شهرِ صنعتیِ شمال بمبئی که خیلی از مادران جایگزین آن‌جا ساکن بودند] چیز عجیبی بود. دلیل دیگرش این بود که، من با خواهرشوهرش آمدم که به‌نظرِ او بدنام بود. با این‌حال، من و مترجمم را (که یک ژورنالیستِ محلیِ سلطه‌جو بود) به آپارتمان تک‌اتاقۀشان دعوت کرد. آنو دخترِ نوجوان و لاغرش که جین پوشیده بود، یک بشقاب بیسکویت برای‌مان آورد.

ژورنالیست، هدف ما را در مَراتی توضیح داد و ما تصمیم گرفتیم برای رعایت حریم خصوصیِ زن‌ها، اسم‌شان را عوض کنیم. پادما مشتاقانه ماجرای یک عملِ رحمِ جایگزین را که برای زوجی در ایالت بیهار انجام داده بود، تعریف کرد. پادما دقایقی حرف زد و ژورنالیست رو به من کرد و گفت، پادما می‌گوید که «برای این‌کار فقط 1.25 لاخ [روپیه] گرفتم، ولی این کم است.»

ضمنا پادما خیلی جدی و بدون لبخند به من نگاه می‌کرد که باعث می‌شد فکر کنم آدم جدی‌ای است و دارد نظرات واقعی‌اش را بیان می‌کند. درواقع بعدا فهمیدم که حسِ شوخیِ رکیکی دارد، و گاهی تند و ناگهانی می‌زد زیر خنده.

در ملاقات بعدی‌مان، پادما داشت در آشپزخانۀ تاریکش پوری سرخ می‌کرد. یک مادرِ جایگزینِ دیگر و یک پیشکار [نمایندۀ مادرانِ جایگزین] هم برای نهار دعوت شده بودند؛ دخترش آنو به‌مناسبتِ ورود ما، از یک کیکِ شکلاتیِ بدونِ تخم‌مرغ پرده‌برداری کرد. یک لقمه در دهانم گذاشت و به رسمِ هندی‌ها، کمی خامه به دماغم مالید.

من نقشی عجیبی داشتم؛ هم گزارشگر بودم و هم عینکی سفید که مشتاقانه به فامیل و همسایه‌ها نشان داده می‌شد. جالب این‌جا بود که من می‌خواستم از افکار خصوصی‌شان سر در بیاورم، ولی هنوز یاد نگرفته بودم چه‌طور از دستشویی‌شان استفاده کنم.

باید یاد می‌گرفتم که چه‌طور با یک مترجم کار کنم و چه‌طور این داستان را گزارش کنم. در آن ماه‌های اول، توجهِ زیادِ آن زنان به ژورنالیست برایم راحت نبود ‌ـــ‌ بخصوص این‌که او با آن‌ها شوخی می‌کرد ولی گاهی شوخی‌ها را برایم ترجمه نمی‌کرد. ماه‌ها بعد، وقتی متنِ مصاحبه‌ها آماده شد، دیدم که گاهی مثلا سوالاتی پرسیده، ولی بعضی چیزها را جا انداخته بود. نقل‌قول‌ها درست بود، ولی نگران بودم که نکات ظریفی را از دست داده باشم ‌ـــ‌ مثلا چیزهایی که از آن زنان پرسیده نشد، ولی خودشان دوست داشتند بگویند.

بدتر از آن، هردوی ما در یک اتاق بودیم و آن‌جا حضورِ پررنگی داشتیم؛ این اصلا شبیهِ سبکِ نویسندگانِ موسوم به «ناظرِ خاموش» که در دانشگاه شناختم ‌ـــ‌ مثل ترسی کیدر یا آدریان نیکول لوبلانک ‌ـــ‌ نبود. وقتی پسرِ پادما تکالیفِ مدرسه را انجام نمی‌داد، ژورنالیست او را می‌زد. من با آنو انگلیسی کار می‌کردم. پادما همیشه اصرار می‌کرد که من ازدواج کنم و از من خواهش می‌کرد وقتی به آپارتمانم در باندرا رسیدم، به او زنگ بزنم.

این صمیمیتِ دوطرفۀ روزافزون، بخشی از فرایند اعتمادسازی بین ما بود. اما نگران بودم داستان را پیچیده کند. تدریجا پادما در جریان مهمانی‌های پرجمعیت خود، ما را به گروهی از مادرانِ جایگزین و اهداکنندگانِ تخمک معرفی کرد. او برای خیلی از آن‌ها، نقشِ پیشکار را داشت، و آن‌ها را به جلساتِ پزشکی می‌برد و هورمون‌های لازم را به آن‌ها تزریق می‌کرد. وقتی همسایه‌ها سر می‌زدند، بحث را عوض می‌کردیم، چون کارِ آن‌ها یک تابو محسوب می‌شد. (مادرانِ جایگزینِ متاهل، معمولا بارداری را به خودشان نسبت می‌دادند، و بعد از زایمان می‌گفتند که بچه مرده به‌دنیا آمده است.) من متوجه شدم که این بارداری‌ها، مخاطرات پزشکی هم دارد، چون مثلا شانس دوقلو زاییدن بالاست، و این زنان آن‌قدر پول درنمی‌آوردند که زندگی‌شان را عوض کند. زوج‌های خارجی، در اتاق‌های بیمارستان یا در دادگاه‌ها ملاقات‌های کوتاهی با مادران جایگزین داشتند. این جدایی، گاهی ازطرفِ کلینیک‌ها تحمیل می‌شد، با این هدف که زوج‌های خارجی از جزئیاتِ قرارداد مالیِ این زنان باخبر نشوند ‌ـــ‌ یا اصلا اطلاعاتی از این زنان نداشته باشند.

نُه ماه بعد، به خانه‌ام در بروکلین پرواز کردم و آن‌جا بود که فهمیدم آن‌چه را برای نوشتنِ کتابم نیاز داشتم، دراختیار ندارم. صحنه‌هایی که ثبت و ضبط کرده بودم، عمدتا شامل زنانی بود که دور هم نشسته بودند و غیبت می‌کردند، و غش‌غش می‌خندیدند، و چای می‌خوردند. زنانِ یادداشت‌های من خیلی تهی و فاقدِ درونیات بودند. هرچند که من ساعات زیادی را با این زن‌ها گذرانده بودم، و به‌نظرم آدم‌های ساده‌ای نبودند، آن‌قدر مطلب از آن‌ها در دست نداشتم که بتوانم شخصیت‌هایی غنی از آن‌ها به تصویر بکشم. یکی از مشکلاتم، ترجمه‌های ناپخته‌ای بود که اندیشه‌های آن‌ها را دقیقا آشکار نمی‌کرد. برای همین برگشتم به بمبئی، و چندین و چند بار این‌کار را تکرار کردم.

هورمون و دارو / یک مادر جایگزین در حال آمادگی برای عمل لقاح در مومبای

ژانویۀ 2012، به یک پارتی در باشگاهِ شبانه‌ای موسوم به بلوفراگ در بمبئی رفتم. آن‌جا با کاترین بـو آشنا شدم؛ او مولفِ کتابی غیرداستانی باعنوانِ پشتِ نقابِ جاودانگان زیبا است که دربارۀ زاغه‌های بمبئی‌ست و برندۀ جایزۀ پولیتزر هم شد. او نَه هندی حرف می‌زد و نه مَراتی، اما کتابش رُمان‌گونه و باشکوه بود. وقتی به او از مشکلاتِ مصاحبه‌هایم گفتم، توصیه کرد که با افرادِ موردنظرم وقتِ بیشتری صرف کنم؛ گفت هم مصاحبه کنم و هم مصاحبه‌ها را مکررا بازبینی کنم تا جزئیاتی از قلم نیفتاده باشد.

کاترین بـو برای نوشتن کتابش، علاوه‌بر این روشِ طاقت‌فرسا، نیازمند منابع و حمایت‌های فراوانی از طرفی نهادهای دیگر بود. او بیش از 3000 مصاحبه را مطالعه کرد و خودش هم شخصا با 168 نفر مصاحبه کرد تا کتابش به چیزی که باید تبدیل شود. او یا مترجمش، روزها و ماه‌های متمادی در زاغه‌نشین‌ها صرف کرده بودند. این نوع کارِ پژوهشی برای من ممکن نبود، چون من برای تامین هزینۀ پروژه‌ام، به درآمدِ تدریسِ خودم متکی بودم. با این‌حال دوست داشتم روشِ کاترین بـو را پیاده کنم.

او جایی در کتابش نوشته بود، «عبدول بلند شد تا خستگی دَر کند که ناگهان متوجه شد آسمان قهوه‌ای‌رنگ است؛ خورشید از میانِ هوای آلوده فرارسیدنِ عصر را خبر می‌داد.» من جملاتی از این قبیل را علامت می‌زدم و از خودم می‌پرسیدم، چه‌طور او فکرِ طرف را خوانده است؟ کاترین بـو در یادداشتِ مولف نوشته است، «من مصاحبه‌ها و راستی‌آزمایی‌های تکراری و بی‌پایانی با آن‌ها داشتم و آن‌قدر به آن‌ها فشار می‌آوردم تا بتوانم افکارشان را درک کنم.»

من فکر کردم که این را روی پادما آزمایش کنم و مثلا به فاضلابِ روبازی که از اولاسناگر رد می‌شود اشاره کنم و از او بپرسم، «این جوب چه رنگی‌ست؟ آیا تو را یاد حیوانی محلی نمی‌اندازد؟» یا این‌که می‌توانستم طی مصاحبه‌های تکراریِ سه‌قسمتی، افکارش را راستی‌آزمایی کنم. حتما فکر می‌کرد دیوانه شده‌ام. شاید این از ناپختگی من بود.

حس می‌کردم نمی‌توانم کتابی را که می‌خواهم، بنویسم. بالاخره، چیارا گویا، عکاس ایتالیایی که من از قبل با او کار می‌کردم، دوباره مرا به هند برگرداند. پادما به‌گرمی از من استقبال کرد و قبول کرد تا مصاحبه‌ها را تکرار کند. جالب بود که وقتی از پادما پرسیدم چه‌طوری به پیشکارِ مادرانِ جایگزین تبدیل شد، داستانش با آن‌چه دفعۀ اول برایم تعریف کرد، متفاوت بود. این دفعه، به من گفت که وقتی پیشکارش او را ترک کرد، خودش این کار را یاد گرفت. یادم می‌آید که چهار سال قبلش، همان زن را دوستِ خود معرفی کرده بود.

پلی از روی فاضلاب / کودکان زاغه اولهانسگر

در این سفر ما با یک مترجمِ جدید کار کردیم، که یک جامعه‌شناسِ باحال و باهوش بود و رفتارش با آن ژورنالیستِ قبلی خیلی فرق داشت. جامعه‌شناس و چیارا [عکاس] سعی می‌کردند به‌اندازۀ من به این خانواده‌ها دلبسته نشوند. به‌نظر آن‌ها پادما، یک دلالِ محلی قوی و حیله‌گر بود. پادما یکی از مادرانِ جایگزینِ را، که بیوۀ لاغری به‌نام سونالی بود، تشویق کرده بود وامِ مسکن بگیرد درحالی‌که از پسِ پرداخت آن بر نمی‌آمد. جامعه‌شناس مشکوک بود که شاید پادما پورسانت می‌گیرد. پادما در شغلِ پیشکاری، ده برابرِ درآمدِ سونالی پول درمی‌آورد، و تا آن زمان یک خانۀ دواتاقه خریده بود. ضمنا جامعه‌شناس چهرۀ تازه‌ای از آنو به من نشان داد که با آن دخترِ دانشجوی شیرین و جدی که می‌شناختم، خیلی فرق داشت؛ درنظر جامعه‌شناس، آنو دختری بود با زبانی ناپخته که مشتریانِ مادرش را تحقیر می‌کرد و سونالی را «عروسک احمق» می‌خواند.

در اولاسناگر حقیقت همیشه گمراه‌کننده است؛ شایعاتی بود مبنی‌بر این‌که مادرانِ جایگزین به خارج سفر می‌کنند، یا بچه‌های خودشان را می‌فروشند، یا قبل از آن‌که نوزاد را تحویل مشتریان خارجی بدهند از آن‌ها حق‌السکوت می‌گیرند. به‌هرحال با انکارِ دکترها، این زنان هم مدرکِ چندانی برای اثبات ادعاهای‌شان نداشتند. اما ناگهان ماجرای خودِ پادما به گمراه‌کننده‌ترین داستان بدل شد. واقعا پادما که بود؟ پادما زنی سرسخت بود که خانواده‌اش را تا طبقۀ متوسط بالا برد ‌ـــ‌ یک زنِ کاسب که سرنوشتِ زنانِ دیگر در دستانِ او بود؛ او عکس‌های پاسپورتِ آن زنان را فوتوشاپ می‌کرد تا پوست‌شان روشن‌تر به‌نظر برسد و اهداکنندگانِ تخمکِ جذابتری به‌نظر برسند.

ازطرفی، پادما به ده‌ها زن این فرصت را می‌داد تا بیشتر از درآمدِ خیاطی در کارگاه‌های دوزندگیِ اولاسناگر، پول دربیاورند. اما شاید هم پادما از این زنان بهره‌کشی کرده بود تا خود را بالا بکشد.

پارسال، بالاخره من داستانِ مادرانِ جایگزین را منتشر کردم. دیگر نمی‌دانستم چه‌طور از پادما بنویسم ‌ـــ‌ کسی که مراقب و نگرانش بودم، و هنوز برایم ناشناخته است. من با کمکِ قوانینِ عجیبِ ادبیاتِ غیرداستانی، می‌توانستم نقش او را تا جای ممکن کمرنگ کنم یا اصلا او را حذف کنم. می‌توانستم فقط دربارۀ هرکدام از ده‌ها زنِ دیگر (مثلا سونالی) بنویسم که روایت‌هایی ساده‌تر و رقت‌انگیزتر داشتند. به این ترتیب داستان من ازلحاظ فنی به‌نوعی درست بود، و ازلحاظ عاطفی هم ارضاکننده‌تر ‌ـــ‌ چون تصویری روشن و پررنگ از بی‌عدالتی ارائه می‌داد. ولی اگر پادما را حذف می‌کردم، چیزی را تعریف می‌کردم که (به‌قول چیماماندا اَدیچی در کنفرانسِ تد) عملا «داستانی یک‌طرفه» بود و تصویری ابدی از زنانِ فقیرِ هندی، به‌صورت قربانیانِ ذلیل و بی‌اراده، ارائه می‌کرد.

پادما یک زن قهرمانِ متضاد و قابل‌تغییر بود. برای نوشتن دربارۀ او، پذیرفتم که قدرتِ درک افکارش را ندارم، و درعین‌حال نمی‌توانم بلندگویی برای حرف‌زدن در اختیارش بگذارم ‌ـــ‌ اما می‌توانم آن‌چه را که گفت، گزارش کنم. شاید این به‌معنای درکِ پیچیدگیِ آدم‌هاست: این‌که فقط یک جنبۀ شخصیتِ او را شناخته‌اید، و فقط می‌توانید یکی از ژست‌های او را به تصویر بکشید.
