قرعه‌کشی

صبح روز ۲۷ ژوئن هوا صاف و آفتابی بود و گرمای خاص یک روز تابستانی را داشت؛ گل‌ها با سخاوت تمام شکفته بودند و سبزه‌ها به رنگ سبز تیره بود. تا ساعت ده صبح، مردم کم کم در میدان روستا، که بین ادارهٔ پست و بانک واقع بود، جمع شدند. در بعضی شهرها، تعداد کسانی که در قرعه‌کشی شرکت می‌کردند، آن‌قدر زیاد بود که قرعه کشی دو روز طول می‌کشید و از این‌رو، یک روز زودتر، یعنی در تاریخ ۲۶ ژوئن آغاز شده بود. اما در این دهکده فقط سیصد نفر زندگی می‌کردند و کل قرعه‌کشی فقط دو ساعت طول می‌کشید. برای همین، ساعت ده صبح شروع می‌شد و وقتی به پایان می‌رسید، مردم هنوز هم به راحتی می‌توانستند برای ناهارشان خانه بروند.

بچه‌ها، البته که قبل از همه توی میدان جمع شدند. تعطیلات تابستانی مدرسه‌ تازه شروع شده بود و بیشتر بچه‌ها هنوز هم به شکل معذبی احساس آزادی می‌کردند؛ اغلب ساکت گوشه‌ای دور هم جمع می‌شدند و بعد آهسته‌ آهسته می‌رفتند سراغ بازٔ‌های پرسروصدایشان. اما موضوع حرف‌هایشان هنوز هم کلاس و درس و کتاب و تنبیه بود. بابی مارتین، قبل از همه جیب‌هایش را پر از سنگ کرد و بچه‌های دیگر هم به تقلید از او، گردترین و صاف‌ترین سنگ‌هایی را می‌توانستند پیدا کنند، جمع می‌کردند؛ بابی و هَری جونز و دیکی دلاکوا – که روستایی‌ها نامش را دلاکروی تلفظ می‌کردند – کپهٔ بزرگی از سنگ در گوشه‌ای از میدان جمع کردند و در مقابل بچه‌های دیگر از آن نگهبانی می‌کردند. دختر‌ها کناری ایستاده بودند و با هم حرف می‌زدند و گه‌گاهی دزدکی به پسر‌ها نگاه می‌کردند و بچه‌های کوچکتر توی گرد خاک می‌لولیدند و یا دست خواهر و برادر بزرگشان را گرفته بودند.

کم‌کم مرد‌ها هم از راه رسیدند و درحالی‌که از دور بچه‌هایشان را نگاه می‌کردند، از کاشت و باران و تراکتور و مالیات حرف زدند. همه آن‌ها، دور از کپهٔ سنگ در گوشه میدان، دور هم جمع شده بودند و گاهی با صدایی نه چندان بلند با هم شوخی می‌کردند و به جای خنده، به هم لبخند می‌زدند. زن‌ها، در لباس‌های خانگی رنگ و رو رفته‌شان بعد از مردهایشان به میدان آمدند. با هم خوش و بش کردند و پشت سر کسانی که هنوز از راه نرسیده بودند، حرف زدند و بعد رفتند که شوهرهایشان را پیدا کنند. دقایقی بعد، زن‌ها که کنار شوهرهایشان ایستاده بودند، بچه‌هایشان را صدا زدند و بعد از چهار پنج بار صدا زدن، بچه‌ها با بی‌میلی از هم جدا شدند و رفتند که کنار والدین خود بایستند. بابی مارتین از دست مادرش فرار کرد و خنده‌کنان به کپهٔ سنگ بازگشت. پدرش به تندی او را سرزنش کرد و بابی به سرعت برگشت و بین پدر و برادر بزرگش ایستاد.

گردانندگی و اجرای قرعه‌کشی هم مثل برنامهٔ رقص توی میدان، کلوب نوجوانان، و برنامه شب هالوین به عهدهٔ آقای سامرز بود، که انرژی و وقت کافی داشت که وقف این‌گونه فعالیت‌ها بکند. او صورت گرد و بشاشی داشت و کارش معامله ذغال سنگ بود و مردم تاسف می‌خورند که بچه ندارد و زنش تندخو و بدزبان است. وقتی آقای سامرز وارد میدان شد و صندوق چوبی سیاه را با خود آورد، همهمه‌ای از میان جمیعت برخاست. او دستش را در هوا تکان داد و گفت: «یک کمی دیر شد، دوستان!» به دنبال او، آقای گرِیوز، رئیس ادارهٔ پست دهکده، سه‌پایه‌ای را که دستش بو وسط میدان گذاشت و آقای سامرز صندق سیاه را روی آن قرار داد. روستایی‌ها کمی عقب رفتند و فضایی میان آن‌ها و صندوق به وجود آمد. و وقتی که آقای سامرز گفت: «کسی بین شما هست که بخواد بهم کمک کنه؟» تردید همه را فرا گرفت و بعد از لحظاتی دو مرد، آقای مارین و پسر بزرگش، باکستر، پا پیش گذاشتند و صندوق چوبی روی سه‌پایه را محکم نگه‌داشتند تا آقای سامرز دست خود را توی آن فرو کند و تکه‌کاغذهای تا شده درون آن را هم بزند. ابزار اصلی قرعه‌کشی سال‌ها می‌شد که گم شده بود و جعبهٔ سیاهی که حالا روی سه‌پایه قرار داشت، هم حتی پیش از آن‌که آقای وارنر، که پیرترین فرد دهکده بود، به دنیا بیاید، در قرعه‌کشی استفاده می‌شد. آقای سامرز اغلب با مردم در مورد ساختن یک جعبه نو حرف می‌زد، اما هیچ‌کس دوست نداشت سنت قرعه‌کشی را حتی در سطح عوض کردن جعبهٔ قدیمی سیاه، تغییر دهد. افسانه‌ای بود که می‌گفت چوب‌های این جعبه از صندوق قبلی بود و آن صندوق هم توسط اولین کسانی که در آن ناحیه سکنی‌ گزیدند و آن روستا را برپا کردند، ساخته شده بود. هر سال، بعد از لاتری، آقای سامرز در مورد ساختن یک جعبه جدید حرف می‌زدند، ولی هر بار مردم می‌گذاشتند که موضوع سرد شود و جعبهٔ جدیدی ساخته نمی‌شد. صندوق اما، هر سال کهنه‌تر به نظر می‌رسد. حالا دیگر حتی کاملاً سیاه هم نبود. رنگ اطراف صندوق پریده بود و رنگ چوب اصلی آن به چشم می‌آمد. قسمت‌هایی از سطح آن هم به شدت خراشیده شده و یا لکه برداشته بود.

آقای مارتین و پسر بزرگش، باکستر، جعبه را محکم روی سه‌پایه نگه‌داشتند تا آن‌که آقای سامرز کاغذهای درون آن را با دست کاملاً مخلوط کرد. از آن‌جا بسیاری از جزییات مراسم قرعه‌کشی فراموش شده و یا نادیده گرفته می‌شد، آقای سامرز مردم را متقاعد کرده بود که به جای تکه‌های چوبی که نسل‌های پیشین از آن در قرعه‌کشی استفاده می‌کردند، از کاغذ استفاده کنند. استدلال آقای سامرز این بود که تکه‌های چوبی برای زمانی که دهکده جمعیت بسیار کمتری داشته، مناسب بود،‌اما حالا که بیشتر از سیصد نفر جمعیت دارد و احتمالاً افزایش هم خواهد یافت، لازم است چیزی استفاده شود که بتوان به راحتی توی صندوق آن را مخلوط کرد.  شب قبل از قرعه‌کشی، آقای سامرز و آقای گرِیوز کاغذها را آماده کردند و توی جعبه چوبی سیاه انداختند و جعبه را هم توی گاوصندوق شرکت ذغال سنگ آقای سامرز قفل کردند تا صبح روز بعد که آقای سامرز آن را با خود به میدان دهکده آورد. باقی سال، جعبه سیاه را می‌سپردند به این و آن؛ یک سال در کاهدانی آقای گریوز بود و سال بعد روی تاقچهٔ مغازهٔ بقالی آقای مارتین. قبل از آن‌که آقای سامرز آغاز رسمی قرعه‌کشی را اعلام کند، همهمه‌ای جعمیت پیچید: فهرست‌ها باید تهیه می‌شد – فهرست سرپرست خانواده‌ها و فهرست اعضای هر خانواده. مراسم جدی دیگری هم بود که طی آن آقای سامرز مقابل رئیس ادارهٔ پست، به عنوان مقام عالی قرعه‌کشی، سوگند یاد می‌کرد. مردم به یاد داشتند که قدیم‌ها مقام عالی قرعه‌کشی در آغاز مراسم یک آواز بخصوص با صدایی نه چندان خوش سر می‌داد، اما به مرور زمان این رسم هم از یاد‌ها رفت. بعضی‌ها می‌گفتند که مقام عالی هنگام خواندن آن آواز می‌ایستاد، برخی دیگر می‌گفتند که در میان مردم راه می‌رفت و می‌خواند. اما از سال‌ها پیش این بخش از مراسم هم کم‌کم دیگر به فراموشی سپرده شد. آن وقت‌ها مراسم احترام رسمی هم به پا می‌شد، که در آن مقام عالی قرعه‌کشی، خطاب به تک تک افرادی که دست می‌کردند توی صندوق که تکه کاغذ (و یا در آن‌ سال‌ها تکه چوبی) بردارند، باید عبارات خاصی به زبان می‌آورد. اما این رسم هم به مرور زمان تقلیل یافته بود به فقط این‌که مقام عالی نام افراد را با صدای بلند ادا کند و از آن‌ها بخواهد که پیش بیایند و از توی صندوق کاغذی بردارند. آقای سامرز همه این‌ها را با سلیقه و جدیت اجرا می‌کرد. آن روز پیراهن سفید تمیزی با شلوار آبی پوشیده، و در حالی‌که یک دستش را روی جعبه سیاه گذاشته بود، با آقای گریوز و مارتین‌ها صحبت می‌کرد. در آن حالت، مرد متشخص و مهمی به نظر می‌رسید. درست لحظه‌ای صحبت‌های آقای سامرز تمام شد و رو کرد به جمعیت، خانم هچنسون، در حالی شالش روی شانه‌هایش افتاده بود، با دوان دوان به میدان وارد شد و خود را لابلای جمعیت جا داد. به خانم دلاکروا گفت: «پاک فراموش کرده بودم امروز چه روزیه.» و بعد هر دو خندیدند. «پیرمردم بیرون بود داشت هیزم می‌شکست و یه دفعه از پنجره نگاه کردم، دیدم غیبش زد و بچه‌ها هم رفتن و بعدش یادم اومد که امروز بیست و هفتمه. با عجله خودمو رسوندم.» خانم هچنسون این را که گفت، دست‌هایش را با پیشبندش پاک کرد و خانم دلاکروا به او گفت: «سروقت رسیدی! هنوز دارن حرف می‌زنند.» خانم هچنسون گردنش را دراز کرد که جمعیت را ببیند و بین آن‌ها شوهر و بچه‌هایش را پیدا کرد که جلوتر از همه ایستاده بودند. برای خداحافظی دستش را آهسته روی شانهٔ خانم دلاکروا زد و راهش را از میان جمعیت به سوی شوهر و بچه‌هایش باز کرد. مردم تا او را می‌دیدند با خوشرویی و خنده کنار می‌رفتند و اجازه می‌دادند، بگذرد. دوسه نفر هم با صدای بلند که همه بشنوند، گفتند: «خانم هچنسون هم بالاخره رسید!» یا «هی،‌ بِل، زنت داره میاد پیشت!»‌

وقتی خانم هچنسون کنار شوهرش ایستاد، آقای سامرز که منتظر بود، با خنده گفت: «تِسی، نزدیک بود بدون تو شروع کنیم.» خانم هچنسون گفت: «مگه می‌خواستی ظرفامو نشسته توی دستشور ول کنم و بیام، جو؟»‌  خنده‌ای در میان جمعیت دوید و مردمی که جابجا شده بودند که به خانم هچنسون راه بدهند، دوباره سر جایشان بازگشتند.

آقای سامرز با لحنی جدی گفت: «بسیار خب، فکر می‌کنم باید قرعه کشی رو شروع کنیم که تمام بشه و ما هم برگردیم سر کار و زندگی‌مون! کسی دیگه‌ای هم هست که هنوز نرسیده باشه؟»

چند نفر گفتند: «دونبر، دونبر!»

آقای سامرز نگاهی به فهرست توی دستش انداخت و گفت: «کلاید دونبر. آره، پاش شکسته و نمیاد. کسی هست که به جای آقای دنبر قرعه بکشد؟»

صدای زنی آمد که گفت: «من! فکر کنم.» و آقای سامرز برگشت به طرف صدا و بلند گفت: «زن آقای دنبر به نیابت از او اینجاست! جنی، پسر بزرگی نداری که قرعه بکشه؟» هر چند آقای سامرز و همه می دانستند که جواب جنی، زن کلاید دنبر، چه خواهد بود،‌ اما وظیفه مقام عالی قرعه‌کشی این بود که سوالات مشابه را به صورت رسمی و با صدای بلند بپرسد که همه بشنوند. آقای سامرز با چهره‌ای دی منتظر شد که خانم دونبر جواب بدهد و او با حسرت گفت: «هوریس، پسرم، شانزده سالشه. فکر کنم امسال خودم باید به جای پیرمردم قرعه بکشم.»‌

آقای سامرز گفت: «بسیار خب!» و روی فهرست دستش چیزی یادداشت کرد. بعد پرسید: «پسر واتسون امسال فقط برای خودش قرعه می‌کشه؟» پسر قدبلندی از میان جمعیت دستش را بالا کرد و گفت: «اینجا! برای خودم و مادرم قرعه می‌کشم.» و چند بار عصبی پلک زد. مردم در اطرافش گفتند: «کار خوبی می‌کنی، جک!» یا «چقدر خوبه که مادرت یه مرد داره که براش قرعه بکشه.» و با هر صدا، جک گویی از چیزی می‌ترسید، سرش را خم می‌کرد.

آقای سامرز ادامه داد: «بسیار خب. فکر می‌کنم همه هستند! وارنر پیرمرد هم رسیده؟»

صدایی از میان جمعیت گفت: «آره. اینجام!» و آقای سامرز دوباره سر تکان داد و وقتی صدایش را صاف کرد، جمعیت خاموش شد: «همه آماده‌اید؟ الان من اسم‌ها رو می‌خونم – اول اسم سرپرست‌ خانواده ها – و بعد مردا یکی یکی میان اینجا و یه تکه کاغذ از توی جعبه برمی‌دارن. کاغذ رو همونجور تاشده نگه‌دارید و بهش نگاه نکنید، تا وقتی که همه کاغذاشون رو برداشتن! روشن شد؟»

مردم با جزییات قرعه‌کشی به حد کافی آشنا بودند و حرف‌های آقای سامرز را با بی‌توجهی گوش دادند. بیشتر آن‌ها ساکت بودند، گه‌گاهی با زبان‌شان لب‌هایشان را خیس می‌کردند و چشم از آقای سامرز بر نداشتند. بعد آقای سامرز یک دستش را بلند کرد و گفت: «آدامز.» مردی خود را از جمعیت کند و پیش آمد. آقای سامرز گفت: «سلام، استیو،» و آقای آدامز گفت: «چطوری، جو؟» و به هم لبخندی عصبی زدند. بعد آقای آدامز به جعبه سیاه نزدیک شد، دستش رو توی آن فرو برد و یک کاغذ تا شده از آن برداشت. گوشهٔ کاغذ را محکم بین انگشت‌هایش گرفته بود. بعد برگشت بدون آن‌که به کاغذ توی دستش نگاه کند، با عجله به جای خود در میان جمعیت بازگشت.

آقای سامرز گفت: «آلن، آندرسون، بنتهام!»

در انتهای جمعیت خانم دلاکروا به خانم گریوز گفت: «چقدر زود می‌گذره! انگار همین هفته پیش بود که قرعه‌کشی کردیم!»

خانم گریوز گفت: «آره، زمان خیلی سریع گذشت!»

صدای آقای سامرز به گوششان رسید: «کلارک… دلاکروا!»

خانمن دلاکروا گفت: «نوبت پیرمرد منه!» و وقتی شوهرش به سمت جعبه راه افتاد، او نفسش را در سینه حبس کرد.

آقای سامرز گفت: «دونبر!» و خانم دونبر با گام‌هایی استوار به سمت جعبه رفت. زنی از پشت سر گفت: «برو،‌جنی! برو!» و دیگری گفت: «آفرین!ن

خانم گریوز گفت: «حالا نوبت ماست!» و چشم دوخت به آقای گریوز که به سمت جعبه رفت، با آقای سامرز خوش و بش کوتاهی کرد و کاغذی از میان جعبه برداشت. تا آن‌وقت بیشتر مردها در جمعیت کاغذهای تاشده‌ای در دست‌های بزرگشان داشتند و با اضطراب آن‌ را بین انگشت‌هایشان می‌فشردند. خانم دونبر و دو پسرش کنار هم ایستاده بود و خانم دونبر بود که کاغذها را در دست داشت.

«هربرت، هچنسون!»

خانم هچنسون به شوهر گفت: «بِل، برو نوبت توئه!» و مردم خندیدند.

«جونز!»

آقای آدامیز به وارنر پیر که کنارش ایستاده بود، گفت: «شنیدم توی ده شمالی مردم می‌خوان دیگه قرعه‌کشی نکنند.»

وارنر پیر خرناسی کشید و گفت: «یه مشت دیوونهٔ عوضی! به حرف جوون‌هاشون گوش می‌کنن. برای اونا هیچی ارزش نداره. بعید نیست بعدش هم بخوان برگردن به غارنشینی. از قدیم گفتن، قرعه‌کشی تابستان، به کشت ذرت‌مون برکت می‌ده! اینجوری پیش برن مجبورن شوربای دونه قناری با بلوط بخورن! قرعه‌کشی همیشه‌ٔ خدا بوده!» و بعد با دلخوری گفت: «همین که جو سامرز روز قرعه‌کشی این‌جوری با همه شوخی می‌کنه، به اندازه کافی بی‌احترامی به رسم و رسوم هست!»

خانم آدامز گفت:‌ «من حتی شنیدم بعضی جاها اصلا قرعه‌کشی ورافتاده!»

وارنر پیر گفت: «غیر از مصیبت و بدبختی چیزی عایدشون نمی‌شه! یه مشت دیوونهٔ عوضی‌اند!»

آقای سامرز داد زد: «مارتین!» بابی مارتین نگاهش را به پدرش دوخت که به سمت جعبه راه افتاد. «اُوِردایک، پِرسی.»

خانم دونبر گفت: «کاش زودتر تموم بشه. کاش زودتر تموم بشه.»

پسرش گفت: «چیزی نمونده.»

«تو آماده باش که فوری بری به پدرت خبر بدی!»

آقای سامرز اسم خودش را هم گفت و بعد یک قدم به پیش گذاشت و از صندوق کاغذی برداشت و بعد: «وارنر.»

وارنر پیر داشت می‌گفت: «هفتاد و هفت ساله که من هر سال تو قرعه‌کشی شرکت کردم. یعنی هفتاد و هفت بار!»

«واتسون!»

پسر قدبلند تلوتلو‌خوران از توی جمعیت آمد بیرون. یکی از بین جمعیت به او گفت: «دستپاچه نشو، جک!» و آقای سامرز گفت: «آهسته! عجله نداریم!»

«زَنینی!»

بعد از آن سکوتی بر جمعیت حاکم شد. گویی انگار نفس هم نمی‌کشیدند. تا آن‌که آقای سامرز کاغذ خودش را به همه نشان داد و گفت: «خب، الان وقتشه.» برای لحظاتی سکوت همچنان حکفرما بود و کسی از جایش تکان نخورد. و بعد هلهله‌ای در میان جمعیت افتاد و همه کاغذهای دستشان را باز کردند.

«به کی رسید؟»

«دست کیه؟

«خانوادهٔ دونبر؟»

«واتسون‌ها؟»

و بعد: «هچنسون! دست هچنسون! به بل هچنسون رسید!»

خانم دونبر به پسر بزرگش گفت: «بدو برو به بابات بگو!»

همه نگاه‌ها به سمت بل هچنسون چرخید که خاموش ایستاده بود و به کاغذ توی دستش نگاه می‌کرد. ناگهان زنش، تسی هچنسون، با صدای بلندی به آقای سامرز گفت: «بهش وقت ندادی که هر کاغذی که دلش می‌خواست برداره. من دیدم. هولش کردی. منصفانه نیست.»

خانم دلاکروا گفت: «تسی، آروم باش. همه‌مون کاغذ برداشتیم. شانسه دیگه!»

بل هچنسون به زنش گفت: «خفه‌ شو، تسی!»

آقای سامرز رو به جمعیت گفت: «خیلی خب، قرعه‌کشی خیلی سریع انجام شد و باید عجله کنیم که زودتر همه چیز تموم بشه!» بعد نگاهی به فهرست دستش انداخت و گفت: «بِل، تو برای خانواده هچنسون قرعه رو کشیدی. کسی دیگه‌ای هم توی خانواده‌ات هست؟»

خانم هچنسون داد زد: «دان و ایوا هم هستن! به اونا هم فرصت بدین!»

آقای سامرز مهربانانه گفت: «تسی، دخترها با خانواده شوهرشون قرعه‌ می‌کشند. تو خودت اینو می‌دونی!»

تسی نالید: «منصفانه نبود!»

بل هچنسون در پاسخ به سوال رسمی آقای سامرز گفت: «نه، کسی دیگه‌ای توی خانواده نداریم. دختر‌ها با خانواده شوهرشون قرعه می‌کشند. و انصاف هم همینه. و من غیر از بچه‌ها کس دیگه‌ای رو ندارم!»

آقای سامرز گفت: «بنابراین، قرعه‌کشی در سطح خانواده‌ها، به نام تو افتاد و حالا خودت می‌تونی بین اعضای خانواده‌ات قرعه کشی کنی! درسته؟»

بل هچنسون گفت: «بله، درسته!»

آقای سامرز پرسید: «چند تا بچه داری، بل؟»

«سه تا. بل جونیر، نانسی و دیو کوچولو. تسی و خودم!»

«خیلی خب! هَری، برگه‌هاشونو آوردی؟»

آقای گریوز سر جنباند و برگه‌ها را نشان داد. آقای سامرز گفت: «بریزشون توی جعبه! کاغذ دست بل رو هم بگیر و بنداز توی جعبه!»

خانم هچنسون نالید: «جُو، باید دوباره قرعه‌کشی کنیم! دارم می‌گم، واقعاً منصفانه نبود. بهش وقت کافی ندادی که کاغذی که خودش می‌خواد برداره. همه دیدن!»

آقای گریوز پنج برگه را از میان برگه‌های دستش انتخاب کرد، آن‌ها یکی یکی تا کرد  و انداخت توی جعبه. بقیه برگه‌ها را روی زمین ریخت و باد آن‌ها را پخش کرد.

خانم هچنسون به مردم گفت: «گوش کنید، چی می‌گم، همه‌تون لطفاً گوش کنید…»

آقای سامرز رو کرد به بل هچنسون و پرسید: «آماده‌ای، بل؟» و بل نگاهی به بچه‌ها و زنش انداخت و سرش را تکان داد.

آقای سامرز گفت: «یادتون باشه! هر برگه‌ای که برمی‌دارید، باز نکنید، تا وقتی که همه اعضای خانواده‌ات یکی برداره. هَری، تو کمکشون کن!»

آقای گریوز دست دیو، کوچکترین پسر بل را گرفت و بردش کنار جعبه و آقای سامرز به او گفت: «دیوی، یه کاغذ از توی جعبه بردار!» دیوی دستش را توی جعبه فرو برد و خندید. آقای سامرز گفت: «فقط یه کاغذ بردار، دیوی. فقط یکی!» و وقتی که دیوی یک کاغذ از توی جعبه بیرون آورد، آقای سامرز گفت: «هری، تو کاغذشو براش نگه‌دار.» آقای گریوز، کاغذ دست بچه را گرفت و کاغذ را از توی مشتش درآورد و به همه نشان داد. دیوی سرش را بلند کرد و با حیرت به آقای گریوز چشم دوخت.

آقای سامرز گفت: «نانسی، نوبت توئه!» نانسی دوازده ساله بود و وقتی به سمت جعبه رفت، دوستانش نفسشان در سینه حبس کردند. کاغذی را با دست‌های ظریفش از جعبه برداشت و بعد آقای سامرز گفت: «بل جونیر، نوبت توئه!» بل، که صورتی سرخ و پاهایی گنده‌تر از سن‌ و سالش داشت و نزدیک بود جعبه را چپه کند. او هم کاغذی برداشت و کناری ایستاد. آقای سامرز گفت: «تسی!»
