زبان فارسی، زیر پوست آسیای جنوبی

امروزه ما عمدتا فارسی را زبان ملی کشور ایران می‌دانیم. اما ایرانِ امروز صرفا بقایای هستهٔ یک جغرافیای پهناور در اوراسیا است که تقریبا هزار سال، فارسی نقش زبان بین‌المللی را در آن بازی می‌کرد. از بوسفور [در غرب ترکیهٔ امروزی] تا براهماپوترا، و آمودریا تا اقیانوس هند، آن‌چه که امروز مورخانْ آن را «جهان پارسی‌زبان» می‌خوانند، ناحیه‌ای درهم‌پیوسته بود که با زبان فارسی و ادبیات آن، و ایده‌ها و ارزش‌های فرهنگی‌ای که با خود حمل می‌کرد پیوند می‌خورد.

مایهٔ حیرت است که زبان فارسی، گسترده‌ترین و موفق‌ترین دوران خود را در هندوستان تجربه کرده است. درواقع بین سال‌های 1000 تا 1860 میلادی، فارسیْ زبانِ رسمی و اداری، و زبان تجارت و فرهنگِ فاخر بود: از نبوغ شاعری امیرخسرو دهلوی (وفات 1325) تا ابوالفضل علامی (مورخ قرن شانزدهم)، تا مرآت‌الاخبار، اولین روزنامهٔ فارسی که رام موهان روی [نویسندهٔ بنگالی] در دههٔ 1820 منتشر می‌کرد، و از کشمیر تا مدرَس. زبان فارسی در هندوستان موضوعی فرقه‌ای محسوب نمی‌شد. دولت رائو شینده (وفات 1827) مهاراجهٔ بمبئی، که یک هندوی دیندار بود، صبح هر روز بدون آن‌که تفألی به دیوان حافظ بزند، از خیمه‌گاه خود بیرون نمی‌رفت. حتی کمپانی هند شرق به زبان فارسی فعالیت می‌کرد. وقتی بریتانیا بر هندوستان مسلط شد، بیش از هشت قرن می‌شد که ادبیات و زبان فارسی و شیوه‌های زندگی پارسی‌مابی راه خود را به خاک هندوستان باز کرده بود.

مایهٔ حیرت است که زبان فارسی، موفق‌ترین دوران خود را در هندوستان تجربه کرده است، و بیش از هشت قرن، زبانِ حکومت، تجارت و فرهنگِ فاخر بوده است.

ریچارد ام. ایتون، بهترین مورخِ اسلام پیشا-استعماریِ جنوب آسیا و مولف چندین کتاب موفق است که با تاریخ طولانی جوامع هندو-مسلمان سروکار دارد. تمرکز او مشخصا بر مناطقی بوده که سلطان‌نشینانِ مسلمان در مجاورتِ قلمروی راجاهای هندو قرار داشتند، و نقاطِ تماسی را خلق می‌کردند که به ظهور فرهنگ‌های مختلط و منحصربه‌فردی انجامید. حالا او این داستان شنیدنی از هندوستانِ «عصر پارسی‌مابی» را در کتابی که احتمالا مهم‌ترین اثر اوست زیر ذره‌بین برده است.

یکی از مسائل عمدهٔ تاریخ‌نگاری اخیر جنوب آسیا همواره این بوده است که اعصار میانهٔ هندوستان را، دوره‌ای بین آغاز سلطنت‌های مسلمان و ظهور استعمار بریتانیا درنظر می‌گیرند. مورخانِ عصر استعمار، تاریخ هند را برای ما سه قسمت کردند، که برمبنای آن، اعصارِ میانهٔ هندوستان، عصر استبداد مسلمانان بود و بین عصر طلایی هندو و لیبرالیسمِ منورالفکرِ دوران سلطهٔ بریتانیا قرار می‌گرفت. مورخانِ پسا-استقلال که این اصطلاحات فرقه‌ای را خوش نداشتند، عبارتِ «هندو-مسلمان-بریطانی» را کنار گذاشتند و واژگانی سکولارتر مثل «باستانی»، «وُسطی» و «مدرن» را جایگزین آن کردند. البته این یک تغییر نامِ محض بود، چون تقسیم‌بندی‌های قدیمی باقی ماند، ضمن این‌که یک تاثیر منفیِ نامگذاریِ جدید این بود که مفهومِ «وسطی» را به‌طرزی مضحک تا قرن نوزدهم امتداد می‌داد. بعدها مورخانی دیگر، هندوستانِ عصر گورکانی (قرن 16 تا 19) را معادلِ اوایل مدرنیته در بقیهٔ دنیا درنظر می‌گرفتند. اما این حس که هندوستانِ عصر میانه، یعنی بین 1000 تا 1800 میلادی، چیز متمایز دیگری داشت، هنوز هم وجود دارد.

نبوغ ایتون در همین جاست: او هندوستانِ عصر میانه را به عصرِ پارسی‌مابی منتسب می‌کند و وجه تمایز آن را به قانع‌کننده‌ترین شکل تشریح می‌کند: عصری که نه در دین بلکه در حیطهٔ تعامل زبان‌ها، فرهنگ‌ها و ایده‌های دو تمدن فرامنطقه‌ای زمان، یعنی جهان سانسکریت و جهان پارسی‌زبان ریشه داشت. ایتون با بهره‌بردن از یافته‌های نسلی تازه از مورخان میان‌رشته‌ای، ازقبیل فرانچسکا اورسینی و سمیرا شیخ، مدل‌های قدیمیِ دوران‌بندی را در هم می‌شکند. به‌گفتهٔ او حکومت‌های پیشا-استعماری به‌طور کلی از تفاوت مذهبی برای تقسیم‌بندی جهان خودشان استفاده نمی‌کردند: مثلا نویسندگان سانسکریت حوالی سال 1000 میلادی، سوارکارانِ ترک را «مسلمان» خطاب نمی‌کردند.

ایدهٔ ایتون ریشه در «جهان‌شهر سانسکریت» دارد که شلدون پولاک آن را مطرح کرد: مطابق این ایده، فرهنگ هندی از حوالی 300 تا 1300 میلادی، نه ازطریق زورِ سرنیزه، که ازطریق تقلید ایده‌ها و آیین‌های موجود در متون سانسکریت، در میان مردمی با پیشینه‌های متفاوت نشر یافت. به‌گفتهٔ ایتون، از حوالی سال‌های 1000 میلادی، یک نیروی فرهنگی دوم با جاذبهٔ فرامنطقه‌ای شروع به گسترش در جنوب آسیا کرد. این «جهان‌شهر پارسی» بود که در شعر و حماسه‌های فارسی مجسم می‌شد، اما همچنین در آثار تاریخی، اخلاقی، علوم و فنِ کشورداری هم حضور داشت. ایتون می‌گوید پیش از 1526 و ظهورِ بابُر اولین امپراطور گورکانی در جلگه‌های هندوستان، جهان‌های سانسکریت و پارسی، در شبه‌‌قارهٔ هند کاملا همپوشانی داشتند.

درنتیجه، داستان عصر میانهٔ هندوستان، اساسا داستان تعاملات چشمگیر بین جهان هند و جهان فارسی است؛ داستان پیوندی محکم با نواحی دیگر، مخصوصا فلات ایران، و با فرهنگ ایران، و با اسلام. ایتون حتی از این فراتر می‌رود و شواهدی مطرح می‌کند مبنی‌بر این‌که گاهی هندوستان به مرکز جهان پارسی‌زبان تبدیل می‌شد. معمولا جنوب آسیا بیشتر از شمالِ آن هندو معرفی می‌شود. ایتون در بررسیِ تلاقیِ جهان‌های پارسی و سانسکریت ‌ــ‌ در رابطه با تغییرات مهم سیاسی، اجتماعی و فرهنگی در هردو ناحیهٔ شمال و جنوب ‌ــ‌ تمامیتِ شبه‌قارهٔ هند را لحاظ می‌کند. او به انتشار مفاهیم پارسی، خصوصا حکمرانی، سیاست و اخلاقیات و تعامل آن‌ها با ایده‌های سانسکریت در مناطق توجه می‌کند و این شیوه را نه‌تنها درمورد زبان‌های فرامنطقه‌ای، که همچنین درمورد ادبیات بومی و هنرهای منطقه‌ای هند به‌کار می‌بَرد.

ایتون در این کار، برای اولین‌بار چیزهایی را توضیح می‌دهد که ‌ــ‌ اگر به اشتباه، جدایی بین هندوها و مسلمانان را شالودهٔ تاریخ‌نگاری جنوب آسیا درنظر بگیریم ‌ــ‌ آن‌وقت غیرقابل توضیح هستند: مثلا این‌که موسس امپراطوری هندوی کارناتا خود را «سلطانِ شاهان هند» اعلام کرد، و این‌که حاکمانِ بعدی هم در نقوشِ خود کلاهِ شاهانِ ایرانی را به سر داشتند، یا این‌که مسجدِ چهارمنار را سلاطینِ قطب‌شاهی در حیدرآباد، از نمادپردازی کیهانیِ عمارت مرکزی وارانگل، که حاکمان هندوی قبلی ساخته بودند، تقلید کردند.

کتابِ «هندوستان در عصر پارسی‌مابی»، شاهکاری کامل از چارلز ایتون است. این اثر بی‌شک به منبعی معتبر دربارهٔ بحث‌انگیزترین دورهٔ سیاسیِ تاریخ طولانی جنوب آسیا تبدیل خواهد شد. تنها خردهٔ من به این کتاب، اشاره به سال 1765 از سوی ایتون به‌عنوان پایان عصر پارسی‌مابی هند است که سال امضای معاهدهٔ الله‌آباد بود و درنتیجهٔ آن امپراطوری گورکانی، بنگال را به کمپانی هند شرقی واگذار کرد. چون فرهنگ پارسی خیلی بیش از آن در هندوستان دوام آورد. درواقع سال 1835 بود که زبان انگلیسی جایگزین فارسی به‌عنوان زبان رسمی هندوستان شد. و تا اواخر قرن نوزدهم آثار فارسی کماکان در چاپخانه‌های هندی به فور تولید می‌شد.

سال 1839، امیلی ایدن [شاعر و مولف انگلیسی] به اتفاق برادرش لرد اوکلند نایب‌السلطنهٔ هند، در اقامتگاه یکی از افسران کمپانی هند شرقی شاهد نمایشی از رقاصه‌ها بود که طی آن بخش‌هایی از زندگی ویشنو و براهما اجرا می‌شد و اشعار فارسی خوانده می‌شد. یکی از رقاصه‌ها، گویی خطاب به نایب‌السلطنه، سرودی عاشقانه را با این مضمون خواند:

من تو شدم، تو من شدی، من تن شدم، تو جان شدی
تا کس نگوید بعد از این، من دیگرم، تو دیگری

این شعری‌ست آشنا از امیرخسرو دهلوی، بزرگ‌ترین شاعر اعصار میانه در دهلی، که هنوز اشعارش در هند و پاکستان خوانده می‌شود. به همین نحو، خدایان هندو و شعر فارسی، در دهان خوانندگان کلاسیک و قلب شنوندگان‌شان در تمام دوران استعماری، همچون جسم و جانی جدایی‌ناپذیر باقی ماندند و تا امروز دوام آوردند. امروز در حیدرآباد هند، هنوز می‌توانید دیوان حافظ را ‌ــ‌ با راهنمای فال حافظ به زبان انگلیسی ‌ــ‌ از بازار کتاب چهارمنار تهیه کنید. و این‌گونه است که فارسی کماکان زیر پوست منطقهٔ جنوب آسیا به بقای خود ادامه می‌دهد.
