هشت و بیست دقیقه صبح بود. دوقلوها هنوز صبحانهاشان را تمام نکرده بودند و خانم والپول، یک چشمش به ساعت بود و چشم دیگرش به پنجرهی آشپزخانه که از آن میتوانست خیابان را ببیند. اتوبوس مدرسه ظرف چند دقیقه میرسید.آن روز، دوقلوها دیرتر از معمول از خواب بیدار شدند و خانم والپول ناشکیبایی خاص ناشی از آغاز صبحی دیر را در خود حس میکرد و سعی داشت با تشر زدن به دوقلوها وقت از دست رفته را جبران کند.
«آخرش مجبور میشین پیاده برین!» این را برای بار سوم به دوقلوها گفت. «اتوبوس منتظر شما نمیمونه! »
جودی گفت:«دارم عجله میکنم، دیگه!» این را که گفت، چشمش به لیوان شیرش بود. «ببین، من بیشتر از جک شیرم رو خوردم!» جک لیوان شیرش را روی میز لغزاند و به لیوان جودی نزدیک کرد و بعد با دقت مقدار شیر توی لیوانها را اندازه گفتند. جک گفت: «نع، ببین تو چقدر بیشتر توی لیوانت شیر داری!»
خانم والپول گفت:«فرقی نمیکنه. جک، صبحونهتو تموم کن!»
جک گفت: «از اولش هم لیوان جودی کمتر از مال من شیر داشت.»
جودی گفت:«مامان، تو بگو! لیوان من کمتر شیر داشت؟»
ساعت مثل روزهای قبل سر ساعت هفت زنگ نزده بود. خانم والپول در واقع از صدای دوش همسایهی بالایی از خواب بیدار شد. قهوهساز هم کندتر از روزهای قبل کار میکرد و تخممرغهایی که جوشانده بود، هنوز کمی نرم بودند. خانم والپول تا آنوقت فقط فرصت کرده بود که یک لیوان آبمیوه برای خودش بریزد، بیآنکه بتواند آن را بنوشد. یکی از آنها – جودی یا جک یا آقای والپول – امروز دیرشان میشد.
خانم والپول داد زد: «جودی؟ جک؟»
جودی موهایش را بد بافته بود. جک دستمالش را گم کرده بود و آقای والپول خلقش تنگ بود. اتوبوس زرد مدرسه جلو پنجرهی آشپزخانه توقف کرد و جودی و جک به سمت در دویدند؛ صبحانهشان ناتمام ماند و به احتمال زیاد کتاب یا دفترچهای هم جا گذاشته بودند. خانم والپول دنبالشان دوید و داد زد: «جک پول شیر یادت رفت؛ ظهر مستقیم برگرد خانه!» پول را به او داد و همانجا ایستاد و منتظر ماند تا بچهها سوار شدند و اتوبوس راه افتاد. سپس به آشپزخانه برگشت و کارش را با جمع کردن ظرفها از روی میز و آماده کردن صبحانهی آقای والپول شروع کرد. خودش باید بعد از ساعت نه، وقتی که آقای والپول هم سرکار میرفت و فرصت تنفسی مییافت،صبحانه میخورد. با خود فکر کرد که حتی آن وقت شاید نتواند صبحانهاش را بخورد. چون تا آن موقع ظرف زیادی برای شستن تلنبار میشد و اگر بعد از ظهر آن روز باران میبارید – که معلوم بود خواهد بارید – هیچ لباسی خشک نمیشد. وقتی آقای والپول از پلهها پایین آمد، خانم والپول با خستگی گفت: «صبح بخیر، عزیزم!» شوهرش بیآنکه به او نگاه کند، گفت: «صبح بخیر،» و خانم والپول با ذهنی پر از جملاتی که با «فکر نمیکنی بقیه مردم هم احساس دارن…» شروع میشد، صبحانهی شوهرش را روی میز چید. آقای والپول توی روزنامهاش غرق شد و خانم والپول، که خیلی دوست داشت بگوید، «فکر کنم متوجه نشدهای که من تا حالا چیزی نخوردم…» ظرف تخممرغهای جوش داده، نان برشته و پیاله قهوه، خیلی آهسته روی میز گذاشت. بعد همه چیز داشت به خوبی پیش میرفت، هرچند با نیم ساعت تاخیر، که ناگهان تلفن زنگ زد. خط تلفن آنها مشترک بود و معمولاً خانم والپول میگذاشت دوبار زنگ بزند و آنوقت، با اطمینان از اینکه تلفن واقعاً برای آنهاست، گوشی را برمیداشت. قبل از ساعت نه – در حالی که آقای والپول هنوز صبحانهاش را تمام نکرده بود – زنگ تلفن به شکل غیرقابل تحملی بیجا بود و خانم والپول با بیمیلی رفت که جواب بدهد.
«هلو؟» صدایش هم تا حدی خشن شده بود.
زنی از آن سوی خط گفت: «خانم والپول؟»
«بله، بفرمایید!»
«ببخشید که مزاحمتان میشم. من …. هستم»
و نامی گفت که برای خانم والپول آشنا نبود. «بله؟» پشت سرش آقای والپول از جا برخاست و برای خودش قهوه ریخت.
«شما سگ دارید؟ یک سگ تازی به رنگ سیاه و قهوهای؟»
خانم والپول، به محض آنکه کلمه سگ را شنید و حتی قبل از آنکه بگوید «بله،» به جنبههای مختلف نگهداری سگ در روستا فکر کرد (شش دلاری که بابت عقیم کردن سگ پرداخت، پارس کردنهای نیمه شب، شبح او هنگامی که کنار تختخواب دوطبقهی بچهها میخوابید، امور مرتبط با حضور سگ در خانه، که مثل اجاق در آشپزخانه، یا باغچهی جلوی منزل و یا آبونمان روزنامه محلی اجتنابناپذیر بود و مهمتر از همه خود سگ، که بین همسایهها به نام لیدی والپول شناخته میشد، یعنی همتراز جک والپول و جودی والپول؛ سگی آرام، و به شدت صبور بود) و در هیچکدام از اینها نتوانست دلیلی برای تلفن یک زن ناآشنا – که احساس میکرد به اندازه خودش عصبانیست – در آن وقت صبح بیابد.
«بله. من سگ دارم. چطور؟»
«سگ بزرگ تازی؟ سیاه و قهوهای؟»
لیدی به همین رنگها بود. خانم والپول با بیصبری گفت: «بله، خودش است. چرا؟»
«مرغهای ما رو کشته!» صدای زن هنگام گفتن این حرف آرام ناگهان آرام به گوش رسید. خانم والپول، اما دلنگران شد. چند ثانیهای ساکت ماند تا آنکه، زن از آن سوی خط گفت: «هلو!»
خانم والپول گفت: «باورم نمیشه! مطمئنید؟»
«امروز صبح سگ شما مرغهای ما رو دنبال میکرده. ساعت هشت صبح بود که سروصداشون رو شنیدیم و شوهرم رفت بیرون که ببینه چه خبره و دید که یه سگ تازی سیاه و قهوهای دو تا از مرغهای ما رو کشته. شوهرم با چوب دنبالش کرد و وقتی برگشت، دو تا مرغ مردهی دیگه هم توی آلونک پیدا کرد! شوهرم میگه سگتون خیلی خوششانسه، که وقتی رفت بیرون ببینه چه خبره، تفنگش رو با خودش نبرده بود، وگرنه الان دیگه سگ نداشتین. باید ببینید چه به روز مرغدونیمون آورده. همه جا پر خون و پَر مرغه!»
خانم والپول با صدای ضعیفی گفت: «خب، از کجا میدونید سگ ما بوده؟»
«جو وایت – همسایهی شما – صبح دیده که شوهرم با چوب سگ رو دنبال میکرده. ایشون گفتن که سگ شما بوده!»
جو وایتِ پیر همسایه بغلی آنها بود و خانم والپول همیشه سعی میکرد با او با خوشرویی برخورد کند. هر وقت او را توی باغچه جلو خانهاش میدید، احوالش را میپرسید و یک بار وقتی جو عکسهای نوههایش را به خانم والپول نشان داد، او با دقت و احترام زیادی به عکسها نگاه کرد.
خانم والپول گفت: «که اینطور!» و بعد اضافه کرد: «حتی اگه شما کاملاً مطمئن باشین، باز هم باورم نمیشه که لیدی همچین کاری کرده باشه. خیلی سگ آرومیه!»
زن آن سوی خط، در واکنش به صدای نگران خانم والپول گفت: «واقعاً هم عجیبه. من خیلی متاسفم که این اتفاق افتاده. ولی…» و بعد مکث کرد.
خانم والپول بیدرنگ گفت: «البته که خرابکاریشو جبران میکنیم!»
زن فوری و با صدایی عذرخواهانه گفت: «نه، نه! اصلاً بهش فکر هم نکنید!»
خانم والپول با تردید گفت: «در هر حال باید جبران…»
«نه، سگتون رو… یعنی… میدونید، باید یه فکری به حال سگتان بکنید!»
وحشتی سرتاپای خانم والپول را در بر گرفت. صبح بدی را آغاز کرده بود. تا آن وقت حتی یک فنجان قهوه هم نتوانسته بود بنوشد. بعد هم که تلفن زنگ زد و او را درگیر وضعیت غیرمنتظرهای کرد. ولی انگار هیچ کدام اینها کافی نبود که آن زن با عبارت «یه فکری…» او را واقعاً ترساند. خانم والپول بعد از مکثی پرسید: «چه جوری؟ منظورم اینه که انتظار دارید من چکار کنم؟»
زن چند لحظه آن سوی خط سکوت کرد و بعد خیلی سریع گفت: «خانم، من نمیدونم چکار باید کرد. ولی من شنیدم که سگ مرغکش رو نمیشه اصلاح کرد. راستش، مرغایی رو که سگ شما کشت، پَر کندم و همین الان گذاشتم توی فِر!»
حلق خانم والپول خشک شده بود. چشمهایش را بست. زن پشت خط یک ریز حرف میزد: «ما هیچ انتظاری نداریم، جز این یه فکری به حال سگتان بکنید. مسلماً درک میکنید که نمیشه اجازه بدیم یک سگ مرغهای ما رو بکشه!»
خانم والپول حس کرد که باید جوابی بدهد: «البته! شما درست میفرمایید!»
«خب؟»
آقای والپول سر راهش به سمت در، از کنار او گذشت و برایش دست تکان داد. خانم والپول هم سرجنباند. قصد داشت قبل از رفتنش ازش بخواهد که سر راهش سری به کتابخانه بزند. با خود فکر کرد، در طول روز به شوهرش زنگ خواهد زد و نام کتابی را که میخواست از کتابخانه برایش بیاورد به او خواهد داد. بعد از این افکار، خانم والپول به زن پشت خط گفت:«اول از همه، باید مطمئن بشم که سگ من بوده که مرغای شما رو کشته. و اگر سگ من باشه، اونوقت به شما قول میدم که دیگه نمیذارم مزاحمتی برای شما درست بکنه.»
«سگ شماست. این رو مطمئنیم!» صدای زن صراحت لهجهی مناطق روستایی را به خود گرفته بود، و انگار میخواست تاکید کند که اگر خانم والپول بخواهد سر این موضوع دعوا کند، او هم از دعوا ابایی ندارد.
خانم والپول در مقابل قاطعانه گفت: «روزتان خوش، خانم!» با اینکه میدانست نباید اینجور با عصبانیت از آن زن خداحافظی میکرد. میدانست که باید به گفتگوی خود با همان لحن عذرخواهانه ادامه میداد که جان سگ خود را از دست این زن یکدنده که عاشق مرغهای لعنتی خود بود، نجات دهد.
خانم والپول گوشی تلفن را گذاشت و به آشپزخانه رفت تا برای خود یک فنجان قهوه بریزد و نان برشته کند. با خود گفت، تا وقتی صبحانهام را نخوردهام، اجازه نمیدهم این قضیه ذهنم را مشغول کند. قهوهاش را نوشید، روی نان برشتهاش کره مالید و سعی کرد خونسردیاش را حفظ کند. به پشتی صندلی تکیه داد و شانههایش را آویزان کرد. آن حس خستگی که ساعت نه و نیم صبح به سراغش آمده بود، معمولاً مال ساعت یازده شب بود. هوا آفتابی بود، اما آنقدر که انتظار داشت، خوشحالش نکرد. خانم والپول ناگهان تصمیم گرفت رختشوری را به فردا که سهشنبه بود، موکول کند. آنها تازه از شهر به آن روستا آمده بودند و خانم والپول هنوز از نحسی رختشوری روز سهشنبه در آن روستا آگاه نبود؛ مردمان شهری بودند و احتمالاً همیشه هم شهری باقی میماندند؛ خانوادهای که یک سگ مرغکش داشتند، روزهای سهشنبه رختشوری میکردند، و از کشاورزی چیزی نمیدانستند و ناچار بودند سادهترین مایحتاج خود را هم بخرند. خانم والپول، در مورد قضیهی سگش هم ناچار شد مثل بقیه موارد (پیدا کردن محل دفع زباله، روشهای عایق کردن در و پنجرهها در مقابل سرما، پختن کیک انجلفود) از دیگران توصیه بخواهد. در روستا تقریبا ناممکن است کسی را یافت که کاری در مقابل مزد انجام دهد و از این جهت خانم و آقای والپول از همان اول عادت کردند که از در و همسایهها نحوهی انجام کارهایی را بپرسند که در شهر معمولاً سرایدار یا نظافتچی یا مامور شرکت گاز مسئول انجام آن است. چشم خانم والپول که به ظرف آب لیدی توی آشپزخانه افتاد، ناگهان دلواپس شد. از جا برخاست، کتش را پوشید و شالی روی سرش انداخت و به خانهی همسایه بغلی رفت.
خانم ناش، همسایه بغلی، داشت دونات سرخ میکرد و از توی آشپزخانه با چنگالی که در دست داشت به خانم والپول که دم در ایستاده بود، اشاره کرد و گفت: «بفرمایید تو، ببخشید دستم بنده، نمیتونم بیام دم در!»
خانم والپول وقتی وارد آشپزخانه خانم ناش شد، یاد ظرفهای کثیف توی ظرفشور آشپزخانهی خودش افتاد. خانم ناش لباس تمیزی به تن داشت و معلوم بود کف آشپزخانه را هم تازه تمیز کرده و تی کشیده. خانم ناش قادر بود دونات سرخ کند، بدون اینکه آشپزخانه کثیف شود.
«مردها برای ناهارشون دونات تازه دوست دارند!» خانم ناش این را بیمقدمه گفت و بعد افزود. «همیشه سعی میکنم به اندازه کافی بپزم، ولی باز هم کم میارم.»
خانم والپول گفت: «کاش من هم میتونستم دونات بپزم!»
خانم ناش با چنگال دستش به دوناتهای گرم توی بشقابی که روی میز گذاشته بود، اشاره کرد و خانم والپول یک دانه برداشت.
«فکر کنم تا وقتی بقیه کارام تموم بشه، دوناتها هم آماده میشن.» بعد نگاهی به ماهیتابه انداخت و وقتی مطمئن شد میتواند دقیقهای از آن چشم بردارد، خودش هم یکی دوناتها را برداشت و شروع کرد به خوردن. «چی شده؟ یه جوری نگران به نظر میرسید!»
خانم والپول گفت: «راستشو بخواید سگمون نگرانم کرده. یه خانم صبح زنگ زد، گفت که سگمون مرغاشو کشته!»
خانم ناش سر تکان داد و گفت: «آره! مرغای خانواده هریس رو! میدونم!»
و خانم والپول با خود فکر کرد، البته که تا حالا باید بهش گفته باشند.
خانم ناش یک دونات دیگر برداشت و گفت: «ولی میدونید! میگن هیچ جوری نمیشه سگی رو که مرغ میکشه، اصلاح کرد. برادرم یه سگ داشت که یه بار یک گوسفند رو کشت و هر کاری که به فکرشون میرسید، کردن که سگه رو اصلاح کنن. ولی نشد که نشد. سگی که مزهی خون رو چشید، دیگه خونخوار میشه…» خانم ناش یکی از دوناتهای سرخ شده را از ماهیتابه برداشت و روی یک کاغذ قهوهای گذاشت که روغنش بچکد.
خانم والپول پرسید: «خب، من چکار میتونم بکنم؟ یعنی هیچ چارهای نداره؟»
خانم ناش گفت: «میشه بعضی روشها رو امتحان کرد. بهترین کار اینه که با یک زنجیر کلفت ببندیش. اینجوری حداقل تا مدتی نمیتونه مرغ بکشه و در نتیجه کسی هم ناچار نمیشه بکشدش و شما رو راحت کنه!»
خانم والپول از جا برخاست و شالش را دوباره سر کرد: «فکر کنم بهتره برم یه زنجیر بخرم.»
«میرین مرکز روستا؟»
«آره، میخوام قبل از اینکه بچهها از مدرسه برگردن، خریدم رو تموم کنم!»
خانم ناش گفت: «پس دونات نخرین! خودم یک بشقاب براتون میآرم. شما یه زنجیر خوب و محکم هم برای سگتون بخرید!»
خانم والپول گفت: «دست شما درد نکنه! واقعاً ممنونم!»
نور درخشان آفتاب روی کف آشپزخانه، میز پایه کلفت با آن بشقاب پر از دوناتی که روی آن قرار داشت، بوی خوشایند سرخکردنی، همه حاکی از اطمینان خانم ناش به یک روش مشخص زندگی بود و این که هیچوقت با دردسری به نام «سگ مرغکش» روبرو نمیشود. خانم ناش نگرانیهای شهری نداشت و پاکیزگی و اعتماد به نفسش چنان فراوان بود که از عهدهاش برمیآمد که خردههای آن را سخاوتمندانه به خانم والپول ببخشد و برایشان یک بشقاب دونات بیاورد و احتمالاً ظرفهای ناشسته و آشپزخانه کثیفشان را نادیده بگیرد.
خانم والپول دوباره گفت: «واقعاً ممنونم!»
خانم ناش در جواب گفت: «میشه لطفاً سر راهتون به تام کیتریج بگین که یه ساعت دیگه میام که ازش یه راسته گوشت پورک بگیرم. بهش بگین برام نگهداره!»
خانم والپول گفت: «حتماً بهش میگم!» و بعد دم در آشپزخانه مکثی کرد و برگشت به سمت خانم ناش. او چنگال توی دستش را تکان داد و گفت: «بعداً میبینمتون!»
جو وایتِ پیر دم در خانهاش توی آفتاب نشسته بود و وقتی خانم والپول را دید، لبخند بزرگی زد و گفت: «فکر کنم سگتون رو از دست میدین!»
خانم والپول با خود فکر کرد، نباید باهاش بدخلقی کنم. با معیارهای زندگی روستایی آدم بد و فضولی نیست. هر کس دیگری جای او بود یک سگ مرغکش رو لو میداد. اما آخر چه نیازیست اینقدر بابت این موضوع خوشحال باشد؟ با آنهم، خانم والپول با لحنی دلپذیر و مودب پاسخ داد: «صبح بخیر، آقای وایت!»
آقای وایت گفت: «مردتون تفنگ توی خونه داره؟ باید بکشیدش!»
خانم والپول گفت: «خیلی نگرانم!» این سمت باغچه آقای وایت ایستاده بود و با تمام تلاش سعی میکرد چهرهاش نفرت درونیاش را آشکار نکند.
آقای وایت گفت: «سگ مرغکش خیلی بده!»
خانم والپول با خود فکر کرد که خوب است حداقل مرا مقصر نمیداند. و بعد پرسید: «راهی به ذهنتون میرسه؟»
آقای وایت کمی فکر کرد و گفت: «فکر کنم یه راهی وجود داره که بشه یک سگ مرغکش رو اصلاح کنی: یه مرغ مرده از گردنش آویزون کن، یه جوری محکم، که نتونه از گردنش دربیاره! فهمیدی؟»
خانم وایت گفت: «مرغ مرده؟ دور گردنش؟»
آقای وایت سر تکان داد و لبخند بیدندانی زد. «وقتی مرغه رو از گردنش آویزون کردی، اول باهاش بازی میکنه و بعدش مرغه اذیتش میکنه و سعی میکنه یه جوری خودش رو خلاص کنه، و اگر نتونه گازش میگیره و وقتی ببینه اینجوری هم از گردنش درنمیاد، میفهمه نمیتونه خودش رو خلاص کنه و میترسه. بعدش خودش دمشو لای پاش میذاره میاد پیش تو که کمکش کنی.»
خانم والپول از نردهی باغچه گرفت که تعادل خود را حفظ کند و پرسید: «خب، بعدش باید چکار کرد؟»
آقای وایت گفت: «طوری که من شنیدم، مرغه بدجوری گندیده میشه و سگه چون مجبور همش بوش کنه، بعدش دیگه کلا از مرغ متنفر میشه. و باز هم از دست اون مرغه خلاص نمیشه. میدونید؟»
خانم والپول پرسید: «خب چه مدتی باید مرغ رو دور گردن سگه – یعنی سگ خودمون، لیدی – نگهداریم؟»
اقای وایت گفت: «تا وقتی که مرغه اونقدر بگنده که خودش بیفته، میدونید!»
خانم والپول گفت: «که اینطور! فکر میکنید موثره؟»
آقای وایت جواب داد: «نمیتونم با اطمینان بگم. خودم هیچ وقت امتحان نکردم!» لحن صدایش طوری بود که گویی میخواست ثابت کند که خودش هیچ وقت سگ مرغکش نداشته. خانم والپول بدون خداحافظی از آقای وایت به راهش ادامه داد. حس میکرد که اگر آقای وایت نبود، کسی نمیتوانست لیدی را به عنوان سگ مرغکش شناسایی کند و لحظهای فکر کرد شاید آقای وایت عمدا لیدی را لو داده؛ چون خانواده والپول شهری هستند. اما بعد به خود گفت، هیچ کس در این دنیا برضد یک سگ شهادت کاذب نمیدهد. فروشگاه دهکده تقریبا از مشتری خالی بود. مردی پشت پیشخانِ بخش ابزارآلات ایستاده بود و مرد دیگری داشت با آقای کیتریج در بخش قصابی فروشگاه حرف میزد. وقتی آقای کیتریج خانم والپول را دید، از دور داد زد: «صبح بخیر خانم والپول. چه روز خوبی!»
خانم والپول جواب داد: «هوا عالیه!»
و آقای کیتریج اضافه کرد: «سگتون بدشانسی آورد!»
خانم والپول نزدیکتر آمد و گفت: «راستش، نمیدونم چیکار کنم!»
مردی که داشت با آقای کیتریج حرف میزد، نگاهی به خانم والپول انداخت و بعد به فروشنده نگاه کرد و او گفت: «امروز صبح سه تا از مرغهای هریس رو کشته!» و مرد سرتکان داد و گفت: «آره، شنیدم!»
خانم والپول گفت: «خانم ناش گفت براش یه راسته گوشت پورک براش نگهدارین. یه ساعت دیگه میاد که ببره.»
مردی که آنجا ایستاده بود، گفت: «دارم میرم همان سمت. میتونم براش ببرم!»
فروشنده گفت: «باشه!»
بعد مرد برگشت و به خانم والپول گفت: «فکر کنم باید بکشیدش!»
خانم والپول پاسخ داد: «امیدوارم به اونجا نکشه. همهمون لیدی رو خیلی دوست داریم.»
آقای کیتریج و آن مرد به هم نگاهی انداختند و بعد فروشنده با لحنی معقول گفت: «ولی خانم والپول، نمیشه یه سگ مرغکش رو همینجوری توی روستا ول کرد.»
مرد گفت: «تا چشم به هم بزنی، میبینی یکی یه گلوله تو مغزش خالی کرده.» و بعد هر دو خندیدند.
خانم والپول پرسید: «یعنی هیچ راهی وجود نداره که اصلاحش کرد؟»
آقای کیتریج گفت: «یه مرغ دور گردنش بندازین!»
مرد گفت: «یکی رو میشناسم که همین کار رو کرد!»
خانم والپول مشتاقانه پرسید: «نتیجه داد؟»
مرد با قاطعیت اما آهسته سرش را به دو سمت تکان داد. آقای کیتریج آرنجش را روی پیشخان گذاشت و کمی به جلو خم شد و گفت: «میدونید، پدر من یه زمانی یه سگ داشت که تخممرغ میخورد! میرفت توی مرغدونی، تخممرغا رو میشکست و میلیسید. فکر کنم نصف بیشتر تخممرغامون را سگه حروم میکرد!»
مرد گفت: «سگی که نصف تخممرغای مرغدونی بخوره، کاروبار آدم رو خراب میکنه!»
آقای کیتریج هم تایید کرد: «معلومه، خیلی ضرر بزرگیه!»
خانم والپول هم متوجه شد دارد سر تکان میدهد.
