فرهنگ فلسفی ولتر: علیه تعصب و قربانی آن

برخی کتاب‌ها نه تنها خطرناک‌‌اند، که قرن‌ها خطرناک می‌مانند: فرهنگ فلسفی (۱۷۶۷) ولتر از این دسته و رسته است. نه فقط به محض انتشار نسخه‌های آن را در پایتخت‌های اروپای قرن هجدهم، گردآوردند که در آتش سوزاندند، کتابی که در آغاز بدون نام مصنّف آن به چاپ رسید، و ولتر را از گزند همان‌ها که آماج تیرهای طعن و تسخر، و ناوک نقد وی در این کتاب‌اند، مصون داشت.

در نیمه‌ی دهه‌ی سی خورشیدی احسان یارشاطر، بنیان‌گذار و کارگردان بنگاه ترجمه و نشر کتاب به نصرالله فلسفی، استاد فرانسه‌دانِ تاریخ دانشگاه تهران، پیشنهاد کرد گزیده‌ای از این فرهنگ فلسفی را به فارسی برگرداند. فلسفی در پایان دیباچه‌‌ی مترجم کتاب  – که در تاریخ ۱۳۳۷ در تهران نشر یافت – به انتخاب «چهل و سه مقاله» از میان یک‌صد و هجده مقاله‌ی ولتر در این کتاب اشاره می‌کند، و ترک ترجمه‌ی حدود دو سوم این فرهنگ را چنین توجیه می‌کند: «ترجمه‌ی قسمتی از مقالات وی که در انتقاد اوضاع سیاسی و دینی زمان نویسنده، یعنی قرن هجدهم، نوشته شده است، با ملاحظه‌ی طرز فکر و رشد اخلاقی و روحی مردم در قرن حاضر، و تحولات سیاسی و دینی جهان در دو قرن اخیر زائد می‌نمود. رعایت میزان رشد فکری و بسط نظر و حدود معتقدات سیاسی و دینی و اخلاقی اکثریت خوانندگان فارسی زبان هم مرا از ترجمه‌ی قسمتی دیگر منصرف کرد و … به همین چهل و سه مقاله که با رعایت تمام جهات و جوانب به ظاهر از مقالات دیگر مناسب‌تر بود، قناعت کرد.»

جالب آن‌که مترجم در این دیباچه تأکید می‌کند: «ولتر با خرافات و روایات و احادیث دروغ و بی‌اساسی که کشیشان عیسوی در طی قرون برای تقویت حکومت روحی و تأمین منافع مادی خود ساخته و در مغز عوام جای داده بودند… به سختی مخالف بود؛» ولی نه مقاله‌ی «خرافه» (superstition) و نه مدخل تعصب (fanatism)، هیچ یک را به فارسی برنمی‌گرداند. مدخل تعصب با این جملات آغاز می‌شود: «تعصب نسبت به خرافه مانند شور و هیجان نسبت به غلیان است، نسبتی که از کوره دررفتن با عصبانیت دارد»؛ یعنی تعصب و خرافه شبیه یکدیگرند، به هم پیوند دارند، بر همدیگر تأثیر می‌گذارند و از هم نیرو می‌گیرند. این دو مدخل نه تنها به هم مربوط‌اند که از مهم‌ترین درآیه‌های فرهنگ فلسفی ولترند، و کنارگذاشتن کلی آن‌ها از ترجمه‌ی فارسی نه مبنای قانع‌کننده‌ای دارد، نه با ملاحظات محیط و محتاط‌منشی مترجم منافاتی می‌توانست داشته باشد.

از میان مقالات فرهنگ فلسفی فقط سی و پنج درآیه در نقد مذهب و متون مقدس‌اند. باقی آن‌ها را می‌توان به دو گروه تقسیم کرد: مسائل فلسفی مانند «خیر»، «خیر اعلی»، «زنجیره‌ی حوادث»، «غایت و علل غایی»، «اختیار»، یا موضوع‌های سیاسی مثل «برابری»، «حکومت‌ها»، «آزادی»؛ و صنف دوم تأملاتی بر روی «مسائل روانی بشر»، «زیباشناسی». دست آخر موضوعاتی پراکنده‌ از قبیل «آدم‌خواری» و «چین» تا «جنگ» و «تجمل». با این همه، فضای کتاب سراسر تحت تأثیر گرایش مذهب‌ستیزانه‌ی نویسنده‌ی نامبردار آن است، و روح آن به سکولاریسم و جدایی سیاست از دیانت فرامی‌خواند.

از میان این دو گروه نیز بسیاری مقالاتِ مهم به فارسی برگردانده نشده‌اند، گرچه مقتضی موجود و مانع مفقود بوده است. برای مثال از قلم انداختن درآیه‌‌ی بلندی مانند «فیلسوف» قابل اغماض نیست، آن‌هم در فرهنگی که «فلسفی» است، و خواندن این درآیه می‌تواند خواننده را به مراد ولتر از «فلسفی» نامیدن این فرهنگ آشناتر و آگاه‌تر سازد. برای حزم و احتیاط بیشتر، دست‌آخر، می‌شد عباراتی حذف شوند، به جای آن‌که کل مقاله یک‌سو نهاده شود.

الگوی ولتر در سبک نوشتن فرهنگ فلسفی خود فرهنگ انتقادی و تاریخی پیر بیل است که در روتردام و در دهه‌ی ۱۶۹۰ نوشته شده است. مدخل‌هایی که بیل برای این فرهنگ برگزیده، از مهم‌ترین مفاهیم فلسفی و انتزاعی تا موضوعات پیش‌پاافتاده‌ی روزمره را دربرمی‌گیرند و تصویری تمام‌نما از عصر نویسنده به دست می‌دهند. انتشار این کتاب در زمانه و زمینه‌ی خود حادثه‌ی فرهنگی، اجتماعی و سیاسی عظیمی به شمار رفت و سلسله‌جنبان رشته‌ای از رویدادهای دیگر، به ویژه در حوزه‌ی فلسفه، علم، و دین گشت. اهمیت این فرهنگ بیشتر به نقد مذهبی و کتاب مقدّس، و کاربرد آیرونی است.

سبک بیل کاملاً با مذاق نوشتاری ولتر سازگار می‌آمد: پراکنده‌نگاری و پاره‌نویسی شیوه‌ای بود که ولتر آن را برای بیان اندیشه‌هایش هموارتر و اثرگذارتر می‌یافت، و بیش از مقالات و رساله‌های بلند و منسجم عالمانه و فاضل‌مآبانه می‌پسندید. گرچه مقالات فرهنگ بیل، بر خلاف فرهنگ فلسفی ولتر، همه به تتبع و تحقیقی جدی و گسترده تکیه داشتند، و صورت و صبغه‌ای مدرسی‌تر آن‌ها به آسانی بازشناختنی بود.

 به واقع، هر یک از درآیه‌های فرهنگ ولتر را می‌توان «جستار» به مفهومی دانست که دو قرنِ پیشتر مونتنی ابداع کرده بود: سبکی رها از هر بست و بندِ پیشینی و بیرونی، و تابع جریان آزاد اندیشیدن و تداعی معانی، و آمیزه‌ای دلبخواهانه از صنایع و سبک‌های گوناگون بلاغی و ادبی، ولی بیش از هر چیز، روراست با خود و خواننده، بدون قضاوت‌های سرسختانه و نتیجه‌گیری‌های قاطعانه، سرشار از رندی و سبک‌بالیِ جزم‌گریز، و آکنده از روح مدارا و گشودگی به روی دیگران و بیگانگان، چه فرد چه اندیشه. با این حال، از دید مضمون مانند فرهنگ بیل، ولتر نیز در این اثر کار اصلی خود را بررسی انتقادی و جدلی نصوص کتاب مقدس و مفاهیم بنیادی دیانت مسیحی می‌داند.

فرهنگ فلسفی  را همان‌گونه که بی‌اعتنا به انسجام معمول کتاب‌ها نوشته شده، پاره‌پاره و پیش و پس می‌توان خواند، و لازم نیست که از ابتدا تا انتها به ترتیب خوانده شود.
